Enzyme polymorphisms: gene frequency distributions with mutation and selection for optimal activity.
نویسنده
چکیده
Gene frequency distributions observed in large-scale surveys of species of Drosophila are shown to be incompatible with a genetic model involving neutral mutations and genetic drift alone. The data are, however, qualitatively similar to predictions based on an alternative model of natural selection for an optimal level of enzyme activity in addition to drift and mutation. The intensity of selection detected reduces the mean rate ofgene substitution to less than one-quarter that expected on the neutral-allele hypothesis.

Determination of fucosyltransferase 3 gene polymorphisms frequency in Iranian blood donors
Abstract Background and Objectives The FUT3 gene regulates the expression of Lewis blood group antigens mainly Lea and Leb. The Lewis negative phenotype, is the result of an inactivated FUT3 enzyme that lacks glycosidase activity. Several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may cause enzyme inactivation with different racial distribution. This study aimed to determine the frequency of these...
متن کاملPrevalence of Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency among the Newborns (Shiraz-Iran)
Background: The frequency of pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency, an autosomal recessive defect, is approximately 3 per 10,000 individuals in Shiraz and surrounding areas, and is increased due to high consanguinity marriage frequency. The purpose of this study is to obtain data on the frequency and spectrum of gene mutation of PK in newborns, from Shiraz and surrounding areas. Materials and Methods...
متن کاملScreening for FecGH Mutation of Growth Differentiation Factor 9 Gene in Iranian Ghezel Sheep Population
Background Ghezel sheep are highly prolific and one of the local sheep breeds in Iran and Turkey. Growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF9) gene has been found to be essential for growth and differentiation of early ovarian follicles. Novel mutations in GDF9 have been associated with increased ovulation rates and high litter sizes in heterozygous carriers. Therefore, fecundity gene for GDF9 (FecGH...
متن کاملMutation and Rare Polymorphisms Insight in Exons 7 and 20 of CFTR Gene in Non-Caucasian Cystic Fibrosis Patients
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common severe autosomal recessive disorder caused by a wide spectrum of mutations in the gene encoding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. The frequencies, types and distributions of mutations vary widely between different populations and ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive analysis of the C...
متن کاملSelection in finite populations with multiple alleles. 3. Genetic divergence with centripetal selection and mutation.
Natural selection for an intermediate level of gene or enzyme activity has been shown to lead to a high frequency of heterotic polymorphisms in populations subject to mutation and random genetic drift. The model assumes a symmetrical spectrum of mutational variation, with the majority of variants having only minor effects on the probability of survival. Each mutational event produces a variant ...
